Keynote Speaker: Elizabeth Lane Lawley, Associate Professor, Information
Technology, Director, Lab for Social Computing, Rochester Institute of
Technology
Keynote Address: "Forecasting the Future of Social Computing
With the rise of the Internet, computing has shifted from a primarily
solitary activity to a fundamentally social one. Social components are
becoming a necessary feature in all kinds of applications. Elizabeth Lane
Lawley will take you on a whirlwind tour of social applications, from the
early days of networked communication to the cutting edge social tools
arriving on the market today, and talk about their relevance to and use in
library contexts.
Elizabeth Lane Lawley is the Director of the Lab for Social Computing at
the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she is also an Associate
Professor of Information Technology. Her current teaching and research
interests focus on social computing technologies such as weblogs, wikis,
virtual worlds, and collaborative information retrieval.
She received her master's degree in Library Science from the University of
Michigan in 1987. She received her doctorate in Information Science from
the University of Alabama in 1999.

in Interesting Times
Julia Blixrud, Assistant Director, Public Programs, Scholarly Publishing &
Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC); Assistant Executive Director,
External Relations, Association of Research Libraries (ARL)
Julia Blixrud has been with the Association of Research Libraries since
December 1996 and provides staff support to several ARL programs with
external activities. In addition to her ARL duties, Julia is the Assistant
Director for Public Programs for SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and
Academic Resources Coalition. Julia's 30-year career in the library
community has included positions at CAPCON and MINITEX library networks,
the Council on Library Resources, and the Library of Congress. She has a BA
in library science and Scandinavian studies from Augsburg College in
Minneapolis, Minnesota, and an MA in library science from the University of
Minnesota.
