Project description:
"Minnesota Triumphs, Tragedies and Treasures"
The growth and development of a state occurs against the backdrop of
complex connections between people, cultures, politics, economics and
the environment. The triumph of one group may have tragic consequences
for another, while an individual tragedy may lead to the triumph of a
reform movement that paves the way for a better future. The documents
that tell these stories are the treasures that shed light on our shared
past.
The history of Minnesota is filled with examples that illustrate this
theme:
* The triumph of white settlement and the tragedy of conflicts
with the Dakota and Ojibwe
* The tragedy of forest fires and the triumph of conservation
reform
* The treasure of family letters and documents that tell the small
stories that reflect a larger whole
* The tragedy of disease and the triumph of medical research and
technology
* The triumph of agricultural production and the tragedy of crop
failure, economic crises and insect plagues
* The treasure of cultural organizations, large and small, that
have preserved memories and promoted the appreciation of art, theater
and history
* The triumph of the mining industry and the tragedy of
environmental pollution and economic dislocation
We are seeking documents that address these or similar themes,
particularly those that have not been digitized. Our definition of
document is quite broad and includes handwritten letters, journals,
treaties, and official papers; however, we are not considering
newspapers and news clippings. We look forward to reviewing the
documents that will provide a glimpse into the records that help define
the meaning of being a Minnesotan.
Our goal for this project is to digitize 250 significant documents.
Estimating an average of five pages per document, that will give us
1,250 pages to digitize. We plan to begin reviewing applications as
early as March 1 and will continue accepting applications until we reach
our goal or our deadline of June 1.
